Seminar on Open Government for Local Officials and Public Announced

URBANA, IL – Champaign County Clerk Gordy Hulten announced today a public seminar for local officials on the Illinois Freedom of Information Act and Open Meetings Act, co-hosted by State’s Attorney Julia Rietz, and featuring the Illinois Attorney General’s Public Access Counselor Sarah Pratt on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM at the Champaign Public Library.

“Understanding and complying with the State of Illinois’ Freedom of Information Act and Open Meetings Act is an important part of our duties as public officials,” said Hulten. “State’s Attorney Rietz and I try to be a resource to our officials and the public, but we’re very excited to have the Public Access Counselor available as a resource as well.”

The seminar will begin at 2:30 PM on Wednesday, May 20, 2015, in the Robeson Pavilion Rooms A & B at the Champaign Public Library, 200 W. Green Street, Champaign. There will be a presentation by the Illinois Attorney General’s Public Access Counselor, followed by time for questions and answers from local officials and the public. All local officials are invited to attend, and the seminar is open to the public and media. There are a limited number of seats for this program, and RSVPs are requested to Champaign County Clerk Gordy Hulten at mail@champaigncountyclerk.com or 217-384-3724.

Individuals with questions or those seeking more information should contact Champaign County Clerk Gordy Hulten at 217-384-3720 or email mail@champaigncountyclerk.com.

FOIA/OMA Questions

As I mentioned a couple months ago, we have scheduled a seminar with the Illinois Attorney General’s office regarding the Freedom of Information Act and the Open Meetings Act. While Ms. Mutchler will be making a standard presenation she is also interested in addressing any specific questions people at the seminar might have.

If you’ve got questions for her, you can contact us at mail@champaigncountyclerk.com or on the phone at 384-3720 or post your question here. We will make sure all questions are passed on to her.

Hope to see you May 22nd.

Freedom of Information and Open Meetings

The Illinois Attorney General has a Public Access Counselor who regularly conducts training around the state on the Open Meetings Act and the Freedom of Information Act. When I learned this, I thought it would be a great idea to bring her in to Champaign County for the benefit of our elected officials here.

We have scheduled a session in Champaign County on May 22, 2007 at the Urbana Civic Center at 6:00 p.m. Our office will be contacting all elected officials in the County as well as others we think might be interested. Members of the public are free to attend as well, but we’d like some advance notice to make sure that the room can accomodate everyone.

We scheduled the meeting after the April election to allow newly elected officials to begin their career with an overview of these important laws.

If you have any questions that you’d like Ms. Mutchler to address, you can post them here. She will also be taking questions at the meeting.
